Am I FAT?
What determines if you are fat? Do you think it is the way you look? or it is the way you feel? or someone told you that you are fat? Do you know that you could be fat not only on the outside but also on the inside. Yes, that’s right, skinny people can be fat too, they can be dangerously fat. So let’s explore what it means to be fat on the outside and what means to be fat on the inside. Remember it is important to manage your weight not only for the beauty of it but also for the health of it.
There are several ways to determine if you are fat (or the correct term is obese). Do not think that one method is better than the other. All of these methods are estimates and do not take into account many factors that are individually relate to you and only you. Learn these methods and speak with your health care providers before setting up any goals for the management of your weight.
1. The rule of thumb. For women it is 100 pounds for 5 feet plus 5 pounds for every additional inch. For men it is 106 pounds for every 5 feet plus 6 pounds for every additional inch. For example, if a female is 5’3″, she should weigh 100+(3×5)=115lbs; and if a male is 5’10”, he should weigh 106+(10×6)=172lbs. To determine if you are obese, you have to take your actual weight and divided by the calculated weight and then multiply it by 100% If you the number is greater than 30%, then you are obese.
2. BMI (Body Mass Index). BMI is based on the height and weight of a person. BMI does not take gender or age into the account. If your BMI is greater than 30%, then you are considered obese. There are BMI tables, BMI calculators (one is located on this blog). You can also use a formula to calculate your BMI, which is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. 1kg=2.2pounds and 1cm=2.54inches.
3. Shape of the body. Generally there are two body shapes – a pear and an apple. The pear shape means that a body has more accumulation of fat in the hip and buttocks area. The apple shape means that the body has more accumulation of fat in the abdominal area. Accumulation of fat in the abdominal area posses more health risks than accumulation of fat in the hip and buttocks area of the body. The abdominal fat can be removed with the healthy eating and physical activity. The fat in the hip and buttocks area cannot be removed because it is mostly found in the female bodies, and it is there for child bearing. It is recommended that if you are obese, try to lose weight all together and do not work specifically on one part of your body. If you try to remove the hip and the buttocks fat with the resistance exercises, you may end up getting bigger hips and buttocks due to the growth of muscle mass on top of the fat.
4. Waist to hip ratio. Measure the circumference of your waist and the hips, then, divide the circumference of your waist by the circumference of your hips. The ratio for men should be 1 or lower, and for women it should be 0.8 or lower.
Finally, what it means to be fat on the inside? Your blood lipids profile. Speak with your doctor about your blood triglycerides and cholesterol levels to determine if you are obese on the inside.
